Membership Brunch A Great Success !

On September 27, 2014, we held our annual Membership Brunch, a festive, informative, and big success.

Over 120 members and guests registered for the event and 10 new members have now joined our branch. Attendees were treated to a festive atmosphere with each table decorated in a movie theme.

Marilyn Fabe, a retired UC Berkeley Senior Lecturer of Film, entertained us with film clips and her analysis of how women have been depicted in film for more than 50 years. We saw silent film era clips displaying women as helpless and alone until saved by a man, followed by a slow evolution to the recent depiction of a young girl in ‘Frozen’ as courageous, brave and capable.

Also during the brunch, we met seven of our branch’s 2014 Tech Trek recipients. Melanie Lewis from Diablo Vista Middle School spoke about her experience at Tech Trek, saying she appreciated and enjoyed the teachers and fun activities. She especially enjoyed one lab because the girls were able to  “blow something up”.  This received a big laugh from the audience!

During the event’s registration period, many of our 30+ special interest groups were represented at informational tables. This year members were encouraged to visit the branch website to learn more about the groups, join, or start a new interest group. Our Holiday Home Tour table provided information on the tour and volunteering. On display was the beautiful quilt made and donated to our branch by Mary Mix and her late sister, Bonnie. Tickets for the quilt drawing were on sale during the Brunch.

A big Thank You for all the wonderful donations to our Past Presidents’ Book Sale.  The proceeds of $395.00 will go towards expenses incurred by our President or a designated elected board member to attend AAUW Convention.  Many thanks to Karen Large, Mary Mix, Marcia Steinhardt and Gerry Washalaski for their support in organizing and running the book sale.

The following branch members also deserve tremendous thanks for their support of our brunch, helping to make this year such a success: Helen Miller, Lori Montgomery, and Karen Borowski obtained the movie theme artifacts at each table, designed, delivered, and set up for us; Dora-Thea Porter designed and obtained our programs, plus served as our event photographer; many branch members served as greeters, registration helpers, and interest group contacts. Big thanks to you all for your generosity.
