9/23 Membership Brunch Keynote
Mayor Cindy Silva: A Local Lens on Women’s Leadership
The Center for American Women and Politics reports that women hold 32 percent of municipal offices, 32.7 percent of state legislatures, and 28 percent of Congress.
And we’re half of the U.S. population.
What are the obstacles to more women in government leadership roles? What are the core challenges and opportunities for women in government? What does it take to succeed?
We’ll be hearing about that and more in our brunch keynote with Walnut Creek Mayor (and DAW member) Cindy Silva. In conversation with Walnut Creek Transportation Commissioner Samantha Caygill, Mayor Silva will be sharing insights drawn from her distinguished career in public service.
Mayor Silva has served on the City Council since 2006 and is currently in her fourth term as mayor. She previously served on the city’s Planning Commission and is a past president of the League of California Cities. In addition to leading the City Council, she represents Walnut Creek on Contra Costa County’s Recycle Smart program, speaks for our county on the East Bay Regional Communications System Authority, and serves as a Governor-appointed member of the California Seismic Safety Commission. Mayor Silva received a BA in Journalism from the University of Southern California.
Samantha Caygill has served since 2008 as Regional Public Affairs Manager for the East Bay Division of the League of California Cities, in addition to serving on the Walnut Creek Transportation Commission since 2018. Commissioner Caygill holds a BA in Spanish and Communication Studies from California State University Sacramento.
Reminder – DAW Branch “Stay at Home” Policy
If you are feeling ill in any way, or have been in close contact with someone known to have tested positive for COVID in the last 10 days, please do not attend any meeting!
Remember that COVID exposure remains a serious issue and that we need to be constantly vigilant. If you plan to attend a branch event, please stay home if you feel ill or if you have been exposed to COVID or any other significant communicable disease. We encourage you to be considerate of everyone attending a function, some of whom might be more susceptible than others. If you have any doubts, test, wear a mask, and err on the side of caution.
While there are inherent risks in attending an in-person event, with your help we will do our best to keep everyone safe at our meetings.
