Help Build a Diverse and Well-Educated Work Force by Sponsoring AAUW Projects
The Danville-Alamo-Walnut Creek (DAW) Branch of AAUW has two initiatives that inspire young women to enter STEM careers and enable college women to complete their degree programs. By supporting these projects, you help create the diverse, well-educated work-force we need for a secure future.
- Tech Trek Science and Math Camp is designed to encourage interest, excitement, and self-confidence in girls who will enter eighth grade in the fall. It features hands-on activities in science, technology, engineering, and math (STEM). All activities and lodging are held at a week-long camp on a university campus.
Goal: Eliminate Gender Bias in STEM Fields
Background: Gender bias in school remains a significant barrier to girls’ progress in STEM. Starting in early childhood, teachers and parents provide explicit and implicit messages that boys and men are “better” at math and science — although there is no evidence for that. Tech Trek STEM camp is designed to develop interest, excitement, and self-confidence in young women who will enter eighth grade in the fall.
The cost for each Tech Trek camper is $1,000. Your tax-deductible donation directly supports a camper from the Danville, Alamo, and Walnut Creek public schools.
- Local Scholarships support local women to complete their academic degree programs. Our merit-based scholarships are granted to women who are enrolled in an accredited four-year college or university and are entering their junior year or higher.
Goal: Reduce financial barriers for women’s education.
Background: In 2020, women held almost two-thirds of outstanding student loan debt in the U.S. That’s about $929 billion. Many women also combine childrearing responsibilities with higher education. AAUW Local Scholarships help reduce student debt for women pursuing higher education.
The minimum award for each scholarship is $2,000. Your tax-deductible donation goes directly toward funding a scholarship to be awarded by our branch.
